Motorola Droid Razr Maxx’s Comes With Battery Life

Motorola's Droid Razr Maxx is a smartphone breakthrough for one single reason -- battery life.
In about a week and a half of testing the Razr Maxx -- making calls, surfing the Web, checking email and using apps throughout the day -- I found myself only needing to charge the phone about once every two days.

What makes this so amazing is the Razr Maxx, like its predecessor, is a 4G smartphone with a 4.3-inch touchscreen. In fact, aside from the battery, the Razr Maxx is essentially the same phone as the original Droid Razr -- they each have the same 960 x 540 screen resolution, 1.2-gigahertz dual-core processor, 1 gigabyte of RAM, 8-megapixel/1080p rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. Both phones run on Google's Android Gingerbread operating system, though an upgrade to Android Ice Cream Sandwich is on the way.
No 4G phone I've ever used, and many 3G phones I've used as well, haven't been able to go two days before a charge. Motorola pulled this off by outfitting the Razr Maxx with a 3,300 mAh (milliampere-hour) battery that is just under twice the size of the original Razr's 1,780 mAh battery.
Along with a bigger battery, of course, comes a bigger phone. The Razr Maxx is 0.35 inches thick and weighs in at 5.22 ounces. The original Razr is 0.28 inches thick and weighs 4.48 ounces. Thankfully, the slick styling of the original Razr is carried over to the Razr Maxx, with a stylish and grippy kevlar-coated back and metallic grey chassis. Up front, both Razr models are covered in Corning's scratch resistant Gorilla Glass.
If you can deal with not having to have the thinnest 4G phone on the block, then there is no question -- the Razr Maxx is a better smartphone than the Razr. For this reason, I could see some early adopters of the Razr, who do value battery life, feeling pretty burned by Motorola's release of the Razr Maxx just a few months later.
While the Razr Maxx is thicker than the Razr, it's still only about as thick as an Apple iPhone 4S -- which is still a very thin phone. I found the Razr Maxx's added weight and thickness resulted in a phone that felt solid but never heavy.
Motorola claims that the Razr Maxx can hit about 21 hours of continuous talk time and 8.5 days of standby battery life -- two figures I wasn't able to reach myself in testing because I was using the phone daily and not talking nonstop for nearly a day. But the performance that I found in the Razr Maxx makes me think this would be an ideal smartphone for someone who travels or is often out of the office and doesn't have an outlet nearby at all times.

The Droid Razr is a Verizon exclusive and sells for $299.99 on a two-year contract, with 32 gigabytes of storage (16 gigabytes built in and 16 gigabytes on an included microSD card). The original Razr, which launched at the same price and storage size, has fallen to $199.99 on a two-year contact and is now down to 16 gigabytes of storage

Nokia's next challenge: Weathering Symbian's quick demise

Nokia’s fourth quarter was a mixed bag as it sold 1 million Lumia devices—below consensus estimates and above worst-case scenarios—but a bigger challenge looms. Can the company significantly boost Lumia sales given that sales of Symbian devices are falling off a cliff?
Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia, put the Lumia vs. Symbian race in context. He touted Lumia sales and noted that Nokia’s plan was to gain traction country by country. Elop noted in Nokia’s earnings release:

In the war of ecosystems, clearly there are some strong contenders already on the field. And with Lumia, we have demonstrated that we belong on the field. Our specific intent has been to establish a beachhead in this war of ecosystems, and country by country that is what we are now accomplishing. To date we have sold well over 1 million Lumia devices. From this beachhead of more than 1 million Lumia devices, you will see us push forward with the sales, marketing and successive product introductions necessary to be successful. We also plan to bring the Lumia series to additional markets including China and Latin America in the first half of 2012.

The catch?

Changing market conditions are putting increased pressure on Symbian. In certain markets, there has been an acceleration of the anticipated trend towards lower-priced smartphones with specifications that are different from Symbian’s traditional strengths. As a result of the changing market conditions, combined with our increased focus on Lumia, we now believe that we will sell fewer Symbian devices than we previously anticipated.

In other words, Lumia has to offset falling Symbian sales just for Nokia to tread water. No pressure there Mr. Elop right?
That Symbian pressure is partially why Nokia’s outlook isn’t so great. Nokia projected first quarter sales that were below the usual seasonal trends and break even for the devices unit. In other words, Nokia really has no visibility into its business.
Barclays Capital analysts said in a research note:

Nokia has sold more than 1.0 million Lumia devices. We consider this a solid metric compared to consensus of 1.3mn and worst case fears of only 500,000. Nokia’s global Lumia rollout continues in 1H12, but under more duress as Symbian demand is declining more rapidly than expected.

If Lumia and Windows Phone devices can’t offset Symbian Nokia will have more pain ahead. There’s already a lot of sales headed in the wrong direction. Here’s the earnings report for Nokia. The table is in Euro.

MTS expands its High Speed Data footprint in Kerala

Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited (SSTL) that nationally operates its telecom services under the MTS brand with over 15 million wireless customers today announced the launch of its high-speed mobile broadband service, MBlaze in ten towns in Kerala - Mahe, Peringanur, Neyyattinkara, Ambalappuzha, Aroor, Mannarkkad, Irinjalakkuda, Edappal, Taliparamba, Payyannur. This latest roll out extends the current MBlaze footprint to 50 towns across the State.

In a release, Vijay Kumar TV, Head - Operations, Kerala, MTS India said, “We are immensely proud to expand the MBlaze network to ten more towns extending our reach to 50 towns across Kerala circle. This expansion is in sync with our endeavour to make MBlaze, our high speed mobile broadband service available to maximum number of customers in the shortest possible time”.

The high-speed mobile broadband service of MTS is supported by a robust network of over 32 branded retail outlets, 3065 mass retail outlets and 80 organised retail outlets in HSD Towns. MTS in Kerala circle has a retail strength of 40 branded retail outlets, 7500 mass retail outlets and 100 organised retail outlets. Additionally, MTS using its High Speed Data network, also brings in the innovative MTS TV service - provides access to Live TV and Video on Demand to customers.

In a short span of time, MTS in India has under the MBlaze brand provides mobile broadband services to more than 1.2 million customers in over 200 cities across the country.

TRAI exempts limit of 200 SMS a day which are sent to, generated by machines

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has exempted the daily SMS limit of 200 for machine to machine and person to machine messages. TRAI restricted mobile users from sending more than 100 SMS / day per SIM starting 27th September 2011, to prevent pesky marketing SMS. Later they increased the limit from 100 to 200 SMS / day per SIM.

TRAI exempted the limit for these business houses after they received representations from the stakeholders that they were not able to send machine to machine and person to machine SMSs which are sent by them to initiate process or application for their operational requirements.

These services include providing details of driver or taxi on booking of Radio Taxi, tentative date of delivery of goods, tentative date of attending complaint, contact details of person attending the complaint etc

Galaxy Nexus India launch postponed to March

The latest Googlephone, the Galaxy Nexus is yet to make its debut in India with many potential consumers eagerly anticipating its release. Back in December, it was reported that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was slated for a January launch, after already being pushed back from a possible December release date. The reason for the delay, cited by Samsung was that there were many product launches in December; hence the brand had decided to delay the product from hitting the shelves. As per a Twitter post from Samsung India in reply to a comment by one of their followers, the company states, “Nexus is expected to be launched in March but we do not have the exact dates. Will update you once we get that information.” So one can expect the handset not to be launched officially any time this month.

One should not get their hopes too high, though as the brand does not confirm this information as anything concrete, with Samsung in a follow up tweet stating that, “We do not have the exact dates. So would update you about the same once we get more information.” The official registration page of the handset does not seem to be updated; with the status still reading ‘Coming Soon.’

As of now, this is still the only handset that is launched with Android Ice Cream Sandwich onboard, but with the Mobile World Conference just around the corner; one would expect Samsung to launch the follow up to the highly successful Galaxy S II, which is the S III at the event. First image of the Sony Ericsson Kumquat leaks online

It seems that the folks at Sony are having a hard time keeping their upcoming smartphones under wraps. Prior to the announcements of their flagship Xperia S handset, numerous image and specification leaks made their way online leaving little to the imagination during their big CES announcement. The only thing that was different was the change in branding from Sony Ericsson to just Sony. It appears that history seems to be repeating itself and an image of their upcoming handset which goes by the codename ST25i Kumquat has made an unofficial appearance online.

The image comes courtesy of a post by Xperia Blog who expects this handset to be officially unveiled at the Mobile World Conference event at Barcelona next month. From the image we can see that the design of the Kumquat is quite similar to Sony’s new flagship handset, the Xperia S. As for specifications, not much information is available except for the handset to feature a 3.5-inch display with a FWVGA resolution, a dual-core 1GHz processor and a 5MP camera. The major similarity with this handset is the LED indicator strip at the bottom of the handset. As mentioned earlier in an earlier report, it was said that this handset could be a successor to the Xperia mini so one should not expect the specifications to be extremely high-end.

The image of the handset features the Sony Ericsson branding, but as we have seen in the past, Sony could possibly unveil the final version of the handset with the Sony only branding. Along with this handset, rumours suggest that Sony could also be launching two other handsets along with the Kumquat which are the Nozomi and Nyphon.

The fact that Sony is having a hard time keeping their handsets under wraps is no news as over the last few months many handsets have managed to sneak their way online. Bharti Airtel extends agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks

Bharti Airtel recently inked a deal that extended its contract with the Nokia Siemens Network for an additional period of five years. Nokia Siemens Network maintains and manages Airtel’s networks. They are responsible for Airtel’s networks in eight circles in India, according to reports by The Economic Times. Reportedly, Nokia Siemens will be managing the 2G and 3G networks in regions like Bihar and Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa, Kolkata, MP and Chhattisgarh, Mumbai, Orissa and West Bengal.

Airtel extends agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks

After Ericsson split from Sony, the former had signed a deal with Bharti Airtel, late last year for five years, which would entitle it to manage mobile networks in fifteen circles. Ericsson would be handling almost seventy percent of Bharti Networks and now reportedly Nokia Siemens would handle the rest. Airtel is said to be looking at upgrading the infrastructure for multi-fold growth.

Nokia Siemens Networks is all set to provide network optimization along with operations and maintenance services from its Global Network Solution Center in Noida. This deal is said to be sixth outsourcing deal between Bharti and Nokia Siemens Networks in the last decade. It is also an extension of a hefty deal that both signed some years ago. Bharti Airtel had started outsourcing to lower costs and ensure high volumes.

"The data story in the country has just begun and we will witness increasing complexity due to multiplicity of network layers specifically when serving data. It is imperative for any service provider to have a complete end-to-end view to manage voice and data services. This initiative is in line with our strategy to create ubiquitous networks for offering enriched customer experience," Bharti Airtel CEO For India and South Asia, Sanjay Kapoor said.

"The deal will help Bharti Airtel to simplify its process and also add improvements to its end to end networks and also enhance its service performance", says Ashish Chowdhary, Head of Customer Operations Asia and Middle East at Nokia Siemens Networks.

Nokia Belle update to start rolling out from next week

Nokia has confirmed through a post on its Twitter account that the Belle update will start rolling out to older devices starting next week.

Although Nokia had previously promised the update to arrive in February, it seems they're going to be nice and release it a week in advance.
The devices that will be updated to Belle include Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia E6, Nokia X7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia C7, Nokia 500 and Nokia Oro. Nokia has also confirmed that the Nokia N8, C7 and C6-01 have now started shipping with the Belle update pre-installed and we're sure other handsets will join them soon.

TRAI Demands Telcos to Publish Tariff Plans in Newspaper

Now you will get all the information about your mobile tariff plans in the newspapers. Telecom regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has directed telcos to publish their tariff plans in newspapers. "Tariffs must be published in atleast one regional, English paper," the regulator says.

According to TRAI, tariffs must be published every six months. It has also directed companies to publish tariff plans in specified formats. Pre-paid, post-paid tariffs will be published in different formats.

New formats will be adopted by companies by February 3. Tariff plans must be tabulated for easy comparison, says the regulator.

Companies must submit publication compliance report to TRAI. All points of sale, telco sites will display tariff plans. "Information on telcos' websites must be updated at all times," says TRAI.

Tariff information at points of sale  must be updated on quarterly basis.

India’s Most Trusted Brands of 2011 – Nokia Tops the List

Nokia has been voted the most trusted brand in India according to a recent survey conducted by research firm Trust Research Advisory (TRA). The “Brand Trust Report, India Study 2011″ was launched in Mumbai on Tuesday by our beloved Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Sir, Former President of India. The survey covered 16,000 brands, based on 61 questions to 2310 respondents in nine major cities.
While the number two and three spots were taken by Tata and Sony, respectively, while LG and Samsung were positioned at number four and five.
Survey also included personalities as brands where Master blaster Tendulkar took 59th position overtaking the Father of  The Nation  – Mahatma Gandhi at 232nd position while actor Aamir Khan was at 242nd rank.
Surprisingly, Bollywood”s legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan’s name does not figure in the top 300 list.
How did this survey work?

TRA’s CEO N Chandramouli said, “As trust is a very subjective term, we developed a trust matrix which included 61 components defining trust which include empathy, non-threatening ambience, perceived competence, corporate altruism, commanding respect, shared interest, displaying sincerity, enthusiasm, outward appearance and accepting responsibility.”

New voice control app comes to Android

Samsung, Apple may introduce waterproof smartphones

A common problem faced by smartphone users is the accidental seepage of water. This may occur due to rains, sweat or any other reason for that matter. At CES 2012, a company called HZO introduced a technology, which could save a smartphone from getting damaged by water, confirms a report by Pocket-lint. HZO have also spoken with representatives from Apple and Samsung about this technology and it appears that the smartphone powerhouses are keen on using this waterproofing solution on their upcoming line.

 

The report by Pocket-lint states that the representative from HZO has said, “We showed the Samsung Chairman the technology with a Samsung Galaxy S that we had coated with HZO and he couldn't believe his eyes. Samsung is really excited by the tech.” The website goes on to state that Apple has also been contacted by HZO and they were hoping to use this technology on the upcoming iPhone 5 as well."

This technology of water blocking is done during the manufacturing process and it creates a nano-scale film barrier, which the company claims has special water proofing properties that take place when applied on the insides of electronic gadgets. It sports a 3MP camera capable of 720p video recording. Additional features include 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory (expandable to 32GB via microSD). The device weighs 345 grams and is 10mm thick.

Nokia Lumia 800 hits FCC, CES bound?

Just as we expected, Nokia will unveil its Lumia 900 Windows Phone — which will be tasked with reinvigorating the mobile platform as its new flagship device — on Monday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The Lumia 900 will be initially available on AT&T, and is described as “sleek” and “metallic,” sources tell the New York Times. It’s a particularly exciting device for Nokia and Microsoft because it will likely be the first “must have” Windows Phone for many consumers.
The Lumia 900 may end up being called the Nokia Ace when it hits the U.S., according to previous rumors, which also pointed to it being the first LTE 4G device available for Windows Phone. It’s said to sport a 4.3-inch display (larger than the Lumia 800 which only has a 3.7-inch display), and a front-facing camera, according to leaked images. Under the hood, it’ll run the same 1.4-gigahertz processor as the 800.
While it may seem confusing for Nokia to launch yet another high-end Windows Phone only a few months after it debuted the Lumia 800 (and its inexpensive sibling the Lumia 710), I don’t think anyone will complain about the Lumia 900′s specs, as it seems to fix all of the issues I had with the Lumia 800 (in particular, the small screen and lack of a front camera).

Samsung Wave Y with Bada 2.0 launched in India

The Wave Y S5380, one of Samsung’s three smartphones that were introduced last year running Bada 2.0 OS, is now available in India.

According to FoneArena, Indian customers can buy theSamsung Wave Y for 7,950 INR (about $150) – that’s about the same price you have to pay for the Android-based Samsung Galaxy Y.

If you get the new handset with a SIM card from Airtel (India’s largest mobile carrier), you also get 500MB of data for 1 month, and 100MB of data for 1 year on 3G.

The Samsung Wave Y S5380 features a 3.2 inch HVGA display, TouchWiz UI, HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, GPS, Samsung ChatOn, Bluetooth 3.0, 3.5mm headset jack, 2MP rear camera, 832MHz processor, and a 2GB memory card pre-installed.

RIM launches BlackBerry 7.1 OS upgrade with NFC support

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, is focused on mobile technology as companies look to increase their market share is a sector growing exponentially.

On Monday, sessions discussed the mobile ecosystem surrounding tablets and smart devices and on Tuesday, the topic was expanded to include social networking and advertising in the mobile context.

Research In Motion (RIM) announced the launch of the BlackBerry 7.1 Operating System (OS) for their smartphones which have been under pressure in the US from Google's Android-powered devices, but dominate developing markets.

RIM said it would begin rolling out the new OS no later than today.

"The new releases of BBM, BlackBerry Traffic and BlackBerry Travel will be available on BlackBerry App World beginning today," the company said in a statement.
 

A new feature included in the new OS is BlackBerry Tag that allows instant sharing of content between BlackBerry users.

"By simply tapping their NFC enabled BlackBerry smartphone against another NFC enabled BlackBerry smartphone, users can make sharing easier than ever," RIM said.

The BlackBerry 7 OS recently met the security criteria for evaluation assurance level 4+.
RIM hopes that this certification will no doubt re-assure IT managers that BlackBerry devices are secure platforms for corporate communications.

To further entice business users away from competing devices, RIM also announced that the7.1 OS allows users to enable the BlackBerry smartphone as a WiFi hotspot that will be able to share its Internet connection with up to five devices.

"The 7.1 update also supports carrier implemented WiFi calling services (UMA/GAN where available), allowing users to make Wi-Fi calls from their BlackBerrysmartphone that don't eat into their airtime minutes," RIM said. 

Polaroid announces the Android-powered SC1630 Smart Camera

Polaroid shocked the Consumer Electronics Show on Tuesday when the company announced a new camera powered by Android. The Polaroid SC1630 Smart Camera is a 3.2-inch device, and it features a whopping 16-megapixel camera capable of 3x optical zoom on a 36-108mm lens. When connected to Wi-Fi, users can instantly upload their images to social networking sites and will also even have access to the Android Market.
