Bangalore: Google Chrome launched in 2008 overtakes Firefox for the first time to become the second most popular web browser after Internet Explorer globally, reveals StatCounter, a web analytics company.

According to Aodhan Cullen, StatCounter’s Chief Executive, "We can look forward to a fascinating battle between Microsoft and Google as the pace of growth of Chrome suggests that it will become a real rival to Internet Explorer globally,", reports Reuters.

Google Chrome holds the top position in U.S market with 25.69 percent compared with Firefox’s 25.23 percent. On the other hand, Internet Explorer remains to be the top player with 50.66 percent globally, where safari is in fourth position with 10.76 percent and then at opera 1.8 percent.

In December 2008, Google released Chrome which quickly picked up the market competing with the giants like Internet Explorer (1995), Apple Safari (2003) and Firefox (2004).

The global stats of StatCounter are based on the collective data gathered on a sample beyond 15 billion page views per month from the StatCounter network of more than three million websites.
